Pictures from Observing and Video Feb 26 and Feb 27 2025

 I had thought about editing my previous post, but decided to just add a post with images of my sites I used.  Anyway, here are some pictures and videos. Again, the pictures are better if you click on them to enlarge them in my opinion. 


February 16th 2025



This is the Pony Express Road. It follows the route of the old Pony Express through the West Desert of Utah. The road was paved when I first started coming out here in 2006 and then the county it is in, tore up the road because of maintenance costs. Then it was repaved about 8 years ago for this segment. After this segment, it is a dirt road that leads far out into the West Desert of Utah. This LINK gives you more information about this trial and there are many wonderful observing locations located off of it! 




This is the road of Hwy 36 that leads out on the Wasatch Forest Land.  Those are the Sheeprock Mountains and the road is very dusty in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter, it is fine unless it is wet or muddy. I once took my Pathfinder out here and got up to FR006 and the mud went up to where the bottom of the rims are. I backed out and left as I wasn't setting up in those conditions and I didn't want to get stuck. 


More of the main road leading out. It gets less bumpy as you get farther out. 


Well, kind of. It gets a little bumpy again as you approach the end of the road. 


These are the signs at the end of this road. You either turn left and head out to the Vernon Reservoir where their are Forest Service toilets and campsites. Turning left leads one to disperse areas. I prefer the disperse areas, little to no people. 


This is the road after turning left. You can see Forest Road 006 near the top on the left, that is where you turn left.  It had a few slight ruts but nothing major. My Subaru Ascent was perfect out here. 




This is about 2 miles up Forest Road 006 approaching the mountains. Road looks wet but it wasn't, it was dry!

This is the 17.5 dob which is set up but not collimated or aligned. The skies here are wonderful, though the Salt Lake light dome to the northeast has increased from about 5 degrees above the horizon to about 10 to 15 degrees now.  I won't observe to the northeast or if I do, the object has to be above about 20-25 degrees above the horizon, a fist to an open hands width. 


The 17.5 after I have collimated it. I am getting a shroud for it, but I have found at my dark sites I really have never used one. I find it keeps my mirror cooler and I don't have a problem with the image. However as I age now, I think a shroud will help as my eyes begin to deteriorate. 


My 14" strut dob with Zambuto mirror is in the background here. I let my friend Shane use it for these sessions since he has a 8 inch dob. Both scopes are wonderful and like with anything I own, I have made them mine by making adjustments. 


17.5 ready to go, collimated using Catseye Tools and aligned. My homemade observing chair is seen off to the left. Love my Ascent. When temps get just a tad warmer and with daylight savings coming on this Sunday, March 9th, 2025, I will start bringing my backpacking air mattress and 2 inch memory foam mattress that is rolled up and sleep in the back after observing. I have a wonderful cover for both scopes.  


The 17.5 facing the Sheeprock Mountains. I LOVE this location. I do fear in about 20-30 years it will degrade from the 21.7 down to 21.5 or so. When I first started coming here I use to get readings in the 21.8 to 21.9 but alas, we bring "more people, more stars upon the land."


This is my 14" that has a Zambuto mirror in it. I let my friend Shane use it since I stick mainly with the 17.5". I know some may not like the strut but Shane can share that this scope with the strings holds its collimation and the views it gives, well, they are simply spectacular! Both scopes have incredible mirrors in them and give off great views. 


I use the 14" when I do a quick trip to the Desert when I need to be quick in my observing, say 2 to 3 hours because I was either working the next day or now, I have appointments or such I need to be here for. I love that you can stand flat footed with this scope and never really need a chair. The only time I use a chair is with this scope is when I am sketching on it. 


The back view of the 14".  I believe as I get older, I will use this scope more and more and the 17.5" may become less used. We'll see how my health holds up. 





Me with the 17.5 as she is ready to go. I call the 17.5 Star Catcher and the 14" Star Viewer. Anyway, I am bundled up here. I have a merino wool base layer on, long pants and long shirt in merino wool. That is followed on the legs with a wool pant, followed by a polyester pant. Then the hunting bibs go over that. My feet have Keen Boots which I use for snow shoeing and are really warm. On my feet is a base polyester sock with a merino wool sock over that. 

On tope I have the merino wool shirt, a merino wool sweater, a polyester sweat shirt. Then I have a hunting parka that goes over that. Basically I take what a friend says he does when he bows hunt in a stand and dress like Him and I honestly can say I NEVER got cold on my feet, legs, torso, arms or head. On the head is a merino wool balaclava and my favorite observing hat is on above that. For my hands I usually use a merino wool mitten and I place a hand warmer in them. My hands come out when I sketch, so sometimes I use a wool mitten with open ends for the fingertips and sometimes my hands get cold. I have an electric hand warmer that I keep charged (two of them) and I keep them in my pockets for when I need to warm my hands up. I hate pictures of myself but oh well, I look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy but I am WARM! 

Come spring and summer, some of the layers come off. I think some may be surprised but the merino wool layer stays on, even in the summer. I go from my winter merino wool layer to a summer merino wool layer, which isn't quite as thick. I found both in the Uinta's Mountains and in the West Desert of Utah, nights, even in the summer get cold!  Come summer I will wear the merino wool base layer, then a wool shirt and a polyester shirt. Legs have the merino wool base, a wool pant and then a polyester pant. That is usually enough to keep me warm. I can always remove a layer which I do as needed based on the temperature. 

I'll end with what is one of my favorite times when observing, twilight or what I love to call "Magic Time." This is the time when the world transitions from day to night. The day sounds begin to fade away; birds of the day go to rest and the creatures of the night begin to emerge. Owls come out, night birds join them. Coyotes begin to howl and if I'm lucky, I get to hear them rustling through the sage brush.  

For me, the earth seems to let out a sigh, a sigh of relief. Gone is the hustle and bustle of the day and soon comes the smoothing calm of the night. This time speaks to my soul. There are only three other times or places on this planet that I feel so peaceful, so calm.  I love this time and I hope these images capture my emotions, my feelings and my passion. 

I guess what I love is everything is set up, and the calm and silence of this moment is exactly what I need to refocus and re-energize myself. Don't get me wrong. I love people, and love being around others, especially my family. However, there is that spot in me that just loves being out in nature and enjoying this moment. My hope is one day one if not both my grandchildren find the same thing and come along with me, or take me as they go out.

February 27th, 2025

Well, I didn't spend the night out at the Sheeprocks, probably should have as I got home about 3:40 a.m. in the early morning of February 28th, 2025. I slept in, got up and unloaded food and drink, and then did my daily hour long swim. I ran a few errands and spent a couple of hours working on stuff for a client. By 2:00 p.m. I was finished so I loaded up dinner and drinks, and drove back out to the West Desert, missing most of the late afternoon commute. 

Ten years ago it would take me only an hour and fifteen to twenty minutes to get out to my dark sites. Now, with all the increase housing and traffic on the first part of my drive out, it takes an hour and forty five minutes to over two hours sometimes or more to get out to these sites. I fear besides the increase of light pollution, the drive out could eventually become a hinderance for those seeking a visual astronomical experience. 



As I was driving out to observing this night, I snapped a shot of the desert where I was heading. It is different then Forest Road 006. Still a good ways out but it cuts about 45 off the trip. The site is up on a ridge and that is good as my old site was about 25 minutes further east, and that site has become a shooting area and shooters leave their targets and old TV's, computer monitors there so I won't use it anymore. That site also sits on a old lakebed so dew is a problem there and it is usually 5-6 degrees colder there.

The road leading out, winding its way along. A tidbit of information here. If you see the mountain in the middle of the image, you can see a low spot just to the right. In the spring, when conditions are right, you can actually observe Omega Centauri there. Your dob will be almost vertical but you can see it. Even that low that globular is magnificent!

Ok, a corny shot but I took it for my wife and to show that the temperature when I got to the site was in the low 60's! I was over dressed at this point! I ended up taking off the merino wool sweater until after the sun set. Just a gorgeous day!

I love how the 17.5 is ready in this image, baffle is on and she is ready. I also love how the setting sun set off the color of the Baltic Birch wood here. 


A good view of the scope, the back of the Ascent where I keep my eyepieces in the field and the back of the chair. On the step ladder are my bibs and parka as I wasn't anywhere near ready to put them on. It was just so clear, so transparent (see those mountains in the back ground!) and incredible!

I LOVE this shot.  I think it came out so well with Venus in the sky, the 17.5 in the twilight and the colors in the sky are just magical! Love this time of night. 


Again, a great shot looking west as the sun is setting, night approaches. Love the hues picked up here. This is natural, I didn't change a thing in this shot, no processing. 


Another angle that I thought I would share. 


I hope it is evident that when I observe, I love the entire experience. Shawn came out a little bit latter and I had to walk down the road to guide him in to the observing site, and then help him set up the 14".  It was such a great night! Both nights were incredible and I truly love this hobby. I hope that for a LONG time I can continue to go out to dark sites in Utah's West Desert. I love the mountains, I love the ocean, but I fell in love with the desert many years ago and am captured and moved by all the beauty that is out there. Both the beauty here on this earth and the wonders and beauties found in the sky above. I am a very lucky man. 






















Observing February 26th and 27th, 2025 2859

A month ago I took a gamble. I looked at the calendar and saw when new moon was and arranged my schedule so that I could head out to the West Desert for observing. Well the weather cooperated and so I headed out.  On this trip I have a new friend and observing companion named Shane. He has a 8 inch Astro dob and on this trip I offered to let him use my 14" dob since I was going to be using the 17.5". 

It has stormed the week before but the weather had cleared and the temperature had gotten really warm for Utah in late February.  As I drove out I was glad to see that there was no snow, but I wanted to make sure there was no mud. Well, as I turned to drive out to my observing spot, the road was dry and ready to go as these images show. 

(Note: All images are better if you click on them.  Sketches are roughly drawn in the field with notes in a small notebook and then completed later using details from notes and from rough sketch. Only basic processing this time on the sketches done on my iPhone. I did not use GIMP to clarify them so sorry they are not as clear. My sketches I believe always look better in person). 


The road initially had some ruts from people going out and driving in the mud when it was wet, but it was no problem for the Ascent I drive. 


The road evened out as I continued to drive out and as I turned onto Forest Road 006 here the road was great! 

I was going to go to one of my favorite spots but I noticed a spot that I had checked out previously and was more off the road and away. Not that on a Wednesday in February was I expecting any one to come out there but me and Shane, we were the only one's crazy enough but I wanted to try the spot out for this summer.

Here I am all bundled up minus my parka ready for a night of winter observing with my scope. 

HEre is the 14" set up for Shane to use. I love this scope, actually I really enjoy both!






We got both scopes set up and were ready to to observe. Night came and we began to observe. Shane loved the motions and the images that the Zambuto mirror still gives in that 14".  She holds collimation and gives great images. 

This was a challenging night for me to begin with. I was going after Hickson 32 in Lepus and then NGC 1821, UGCA 104, NGC 1794 and NGC 1738 & 1739.  For the life of me for the first hour of observing I just could not star hop. I thought something could have been wrong with the scope so I checked it out by looking at M42 and some other Messier and all was great! So it had to be me. Frustrated I decided to take a look for Abell 7, not sure I would located it. 

Well, I did the star hop and sure enough, Abell 7 was there! It was large, with a semi circle shape with no filter and stood out. OIII and UHC enhanced the view with the OIII giving me the best view. With averted vision I was able to discern some brighter portions of this PN and captured that in my sketch. 

One thing I've started doing is using these little notebooks to record my observations and to use as I make a rudimentary sketch in the field. Then using the notes and my memory, I complete the sketch. Here is what it looks like. Note if I sketch them I write sketch next to them when I feel the sketch is completed.

Large, no, very large planetary and one fun observation. Mag is 13.2 but stretched out in a large area over 12.7 arc seconds. No filter showed a half circle with averted vision completing the half circles. Some parts have very uneven brightness. OIII gave the best view with brighter areas of the PN being observed. 


 Now I had gained my confidence so I went to work.  I went over to Gemini just to try a new area. NGC 2289, 2288, 2290 and 2291 were on my list. I wasn't sure if I would see them but I star hopped as it was easy and started looking. I used the 14mm Pentax XW at first, working my way down to the 10mm and the 7mm and with the 7mm I began to detect some of them.

NGC 2289 is small, faint and somewhat elongated E-W.  Not much to look at but a faint fuzzy. 
NGC 2288 is really small, and very, very faint. 
NGC 2290 is the brightest of the galaxies in this group. It is still faint and small, yet has a brighter inner core region. There is a hint of structure using averted vision. 
NGC 2291 is also small, faint and I would say has an uneven surface brightness. 

Nothing to write home about but these were a visual test of my eyes and there were working as normal. Not sure what my frustration was early but it goes to show that even experienced observers can struggle at times! 

After this observation I hunted down NGC 2388, 2389 and 2390 in Gemini.

I also got but did not sketch NGC 2291 and 2294.  

NGC 2389 is the brightest in this trio of galaxies. It is bright and oval, laying E to W with fading outer halo. Structure of arms was detected using averted vision. Small bright nucleus with no defined core. 

NGC 2388 is rather faint and small, somewhat elongated and has an even surface brightness. 

NGC 2390 is oval and faint, even surface brightness. 








I now went back to Lepus. Here I did manage the star hope to NGC 1738 and 1739 and captured them. 

4. NGC 1738 (12.89 mag)  & 1739  (13.5 mag) in Lepus.

I overshot these once again using the 22mm T4 so I put in the 14mm Pentax XW and picked them up in my star hop. The 14mm detected two very faint galaxies, and the 10mm and 7mm really brought them out. 

NGC 1738 is a faint and small oval laying NE to SW. It has an even surface brightness and a hint of a brighter core area. 

NGC 1739 is even fainter and has an oval shape laying N to S and again, is very small. Not for the faint of heart and not ones I'll revisit but a fun star hop and sketch. 


From here I jumped over to NGC 1832 in Lepus.

NGC 1832 is a fairly bright galaxy, large and sitting N to S.  It has a small bright core. Averted vision showed some darkening/mottling. 




It was getting late so I took a break from the faint stuff and took a look at the planetaries in Orion and went for the Flame Nebula and the Horsehead. I was able to detect a small portion of the Flame without a filter and with the H Beta filter the nebula was observable. That meant that B33 should be observable and sure enough it was. I felt bad because on both I didn't call Shane over for a view as he was really engaged in what he was observing. Perhaps next time . . . Anyway, I didn't want to sketch those items but just give them a try. So no sketch of them, but if I have time in March, and conditions are good, I am putting a new sketch of B33 down as I would like to give the Horsehead a go with the 17.5. 


It was getting late into the night now, so next I went over to Lynx as NGC 2830, 2831, 2834 were on my list to observe and sketch.

NGC 2832 is moderately bright, small and rounded to an oval shape. It has a round bright core region. Brightest of the 4 in ARP 779. 

NGC 2831 is very faint, round and really small, a knot on the SW edge of the halo on NGC 2832. Needed averted vision to really hold it. 

NGC 2830 is faint and has a low but constant surface brightness. 

NGC 2834 is extremely faint, needing averted vision to show it and is small and round. This is the epitome of a faint fuzzy. 

This ended the night for me. What started out as a frustrating night, ended well, and between the quick draft and sketching notes, I felt I captured what I saw at the eyepiece very well.

Magic time. 


Well on Thursday night I got out and set up and then got everything done well before sunset. I had done the collimation last Saturday with Shane in my garage on the 14 and the 17.5 and cleaned them up and did a tune up. Here in the field I used the Catseye Collimation tools and nailed the collimation and then confirmed it at twilight with my Glatter laser and TuBlug. It is nice when they all align. 

After taking the bottom picture, I ate my dinner. As I was doing that the coyotes began to howl in the distance. Feeling somewhat feisty, I answered back and they replied. About 5 minutes later I heard them closer so I let out a yell and to my surprise I got a snarl back. I turned on my flashlight and about 25 yards out was a coyote with its ears laid back and snarling its teeth at me. 

I simply reached into the back of my Ascent, taking out some protection and the moment I yelled at it and showed the coyote I meant business, it ran off. This is a pretty good view of what he looked like: 


Anyway, I have had one other encounter where one stuck around because I arrived at my location after dark and set up in the dark and the next morning realized there was a deer carcass nearby.  I had no further issues that evening though. 

I started observing when Shane arrived after dark. I had to guide him into the observing location. Once the 14 was set up and he was observing I went to work. 

I did some casual observing for awhile, waiting or my constellation of the evening to rise up as I was heading off into Leo Minor, Lynx and Leo.  First stop later that evening for sketching was NGC 2859 a galaxy in Leo Minor. Easy star hop and a fun time observing this galaxy.

This is an easy star hop. Started from Alpha Lynx and moved down to two stars and this galaxy is located to the SW of them. Moderately bright, and rather large, 10th magnitude. Out halo has a good concentration with a fainter edge leading to a bright core region. Seems to me to be some darkening around the core. 



2. Now I went down to NGC 2964, 2968 and 2970 in Leo. Rather easy star hop following a chain of stars down and then moving over from them.

NGC 2964 is a rather bright galaxy at magnitude 10, and has a sharp concentration. The core is really bright with a small bright nucleus.  Outside of the nucleus is an uneven surface brightness in the N & S.  Arms are viewed extending and a stronger view of arms are seen on the E-W sides. Northern arm is much fainter. 

NGC 2968 is a rather bright galaxy with sharp concentration as well. Has a bright and somewhat elongated core. NE of the core shows some mottling. 

NGC 2970 is a very faint galaxy and small partially elongated. Sharp bright nucleus along sharp concentration.

Galaxies in Leo. 

NGC 2988 is a small and faint galaxy, roundish in shape, perhaps a little elongated with a small bright core. 

NGC 2991 is very faint and small, roundish in shape, hard to hold without averted vision.  Small part is attached to NGC 2988. 

NGC 2994 is a small, elongated galaxy, elongated NW-SE, and is faint with a weal concentration gradually growing a little brighter toward the center.

NGC 3003 is a large, bright, elongated WSW to ENE galaxy.  Mottling is observed on the galaxy with a slightly bulging core.  It is brightest along its main axis and there are several small knots on the western edge. Very low surface patch that extends outward, nice galaxy to observe and sketch! 


5. I was on a roll so I kept going. I had initially thought I would finish early, say 11:00 pm or so but by the time I was done this night it was near 2:00 a.m.! So easy to get caught up in the observing!

NGC 3021 is a bright galaxy though relatively small in size. It has a bright inner core region and a stellar nucleus. I showed Shane this and told him it looks like a star with nebulosity around it! The other halo is irregular in its brightness and perhaps some mottling seen hinting at arms?

NGC 3067 is another relatively bright galaxy somewhat elongated WNW to ENE. Core is bright though no nucleus was observed. Some mottling or knots and some darkening around the inner halo suggested some structure?

NGC 3098 is yet another brighter galaxy relatively speaking, having an even surface brightness with a bright and slightly bulging inner core. Elongated E to W.

NGC 3162 is a rather bright but rather small intermediate spiral galaxy in Leo.  Rather diffused having a weak to broad concentration. It has a small stellar nucleus and mottling, hinting at arms. 


I had to be wit a client until 6pm on Friday so I did not go out that evening unfortunately.  Friday would have been another great night but life had other needs that night. Grateful for the two nights I got out and away from all the craziness of our world right now! Saturday was partly cloudy and moved to mostly cloudy so I called this new moon period a wrap.  Now we have storms all weeks so I doubt I'll get much lunar or double stars or open cluster viewing in. I'm okay if new moon in March can be just as good as February was!
