Left Brain Right Brain: JWST Looks at Exposed Cranium Nebula or PMR 1

 



The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has just given us a front-row seat to a stellar "brain scan," and honestly, it’s as eerie as it is beautiful.

NASA recently released new images of PMR 1 (see above), a nebula that looks so much like a glowing brain tucked inside a transparent skull that astronomers have officially nicknamed it the "Exposed Cranium" nebula. PMR 1 is located in the southern constellation Vela (the Sails) and is not a great target for visual observers with a very low surface brightness and an integrated visual magnitude of +14.5 to +15.2. The central star is roughly +16.5 magnitude.

It's Back: 3iAtlas and Images from ESA's JUICE

 

 

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) spacecraft has captured and transmitted the first science-quality images of 3I/ATLAS, only the third interstellar object ever detected passing through our Solar System (following 'Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov).

The Great Silence: Why Earth Might Already Be Mid-Life and Why We Don't Hear from Alien Civilizations

 

 The arXiv paper, "Constraining the Lifespan of Intelligent Technological Civilization in the Galaxy" (Rahvar & Rouhani, 2026), LINK uses the Fermi Paradox (the contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial life and the lack of evidence for it) to calculate a maximum lifespan for technological societies.

The Lone Wanderer: The Supernovae That Couldn't Find Its Way Home

 

 

As visual observers and imagers, we usually hunt for supernovae in the busy, star-filled "neighborhoods" of galaxies. We look at the dust lanes of M51 or the spiral arms of NGC 6946 because that’s where the action is. But SN 2024abvb decided to do something completely different. It exploded in the absolute middle of nowhere.

This event is what astronomers call a Type Icn supernova, and it’s one of the rarest breeds in the cosmic zoo. Here is why this specific blast is shaking up our understanding of how massive stars live and die

Catching the Radio Echo of a Billion Suns!

 

 We spend a lot of time at the eyepiece looking for photons that have traveled millions of light-years just to hit our retinas. Many spend a lot of time imaging those same photons. But what about the things we can't see? Recently, a team of astronomers using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) found something that went off like a bomb in the night, but left no visual trace. They’ve named it ASKAP J005512.2-255834, and it’s a total powerhouse.

The Ghost in the Machine: Webb Finds Its First Supernova Progenitor

 

 

For those of us who spend our nights finding various objects in the night sky, there’s a certain thrill when something "new" appears. On June 29, 2025, the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) caught a brilliant flash in the spiral galaxy NGC 1637. Designated 2025pht, this supernova quickly became a "must-see" for professional assets. But while most eyes were on the explosion, a team led by Charlie Kilpatrick did something every savvy observer does: they checked the archives.

In what marks the first-ever detection of a supernova progenitor by the James Webb Space Telescope, the team managed to look back at data Webb had captured in 2024—just months before the star went boom. What they found might finally solve the "Case of the Missing Red Supergiants."
