Eadsy Astronomy Astronomical Events for 2026

 

Hi everyone, 

I just posted over at Eadsy Astronomy LINK  an Astronomical Event Google Doc I have created for 2026. I review Solar events and Solar Eciples, Lunar Eclipses and information related to the current solar cycle we are in and predictions for solar activity in 2026. I also share planetary informaiton and occulations with the Sun, Jupiter moon shadows and transit information, Venus' phases by time of year.

I also offer some suggested objects to observe by month for beginners, intermediete and advance observers and imagers. Let's just say there is a plethery of information over there. I have attached it as a PDF and given a Google Doc line IF you want to make a copy and have your own.

There are lots of cool things happening in 2026 and I bet a lot that will come up! 

I hope you have a Merry New Year and it brings many wonderful observing/imaging opportunities for each of you and that you increase your love and knowlege of astronomy!

Observing Report: December 29th, 2025 A Double Take or Double Star Observing; Reflectino of Zambuto Mirrors and Future of the Hobby

 


I just shared a post over at EadsyAstronomy LINK on my observing session out my Butterfield Canyon on Monday, December 29th, 2025. I share the sketches I made an a comparison of my 10" dob with a Zambuto mirror with the views in my TeleVue NP101. I also reflect on my Zambuto mirrors and the future of the hobby. Scientists listened to 3I/Atlas, this is what they heard; What if an Alien Civilization at our technology level was listening for us?/ Wait, Are WE the Real Aliens on Earth/ What Astronomical Object Could Explain the Star of Bethleham?

I have read about 8 articles today and selected these four as the ones I found interesting and thought I would share. We actually listened to 3I/Atlas for technology on December 18th and I share what scientists heard . . . . 

What if instead of looking for alien civilizaitons we assume that there is another civilizaiton that is arising similar to us. What would they look for to find us? That could help us to know how to begin looking for them. 

Wait, perhaps we are the Aliens? That old message that life orginated on Mars and came to Earth on meteorites is discussed with its pros and cons. 

Finally, a little late perhaps, but Phys.org published an article today sharing what could have caused the Star of Bethelem and how that object could have appeared not to move.

Red Light, Bright Light, Dim Light, No Light.

 


Red Light. As amateurs we all know that red light is one of the better lights to use to preserve night vision. There are a lot of options and I own a lot, too many. Great Visual of why you cannot observe Mars or Venus Right Now and a Cool Fact

 


In my weekly newsletter yesterday (and for the last several weeks, I have mentioned that we just cannot observe Mars and Venus right now as they are too much in the glare of the Sun. Solar Activity Decembert 27th 2025 New MClass 5.1 Flare sent out from AR4323 (old AR4294/4296).

 


Well like I discussed yesterday, that old Solar region, AR4294/4296 is emerging on the limb of the Sun and has survived and is relabeled as AR4323.  A region next to it sent out a MClass5.1 flare and CME today. Head over to EadsyAstronomy to learn more. LINK. Also expect IF it ever clears to have some good solar observing or imaging available this week as this rather active region comes back into view. 

Observing Report: July 23rd and 24th, 2025; Top View, Toon Rd, West Desert Utah

What's Up with our Nearest Star, Our Sun?

 


I haven't updated on the Sun lately and I need to include Solar Observing in my weekly newsletter. I give a full update at this LINK over at EadsyAstronomy.  Let's just say one of these Sunspots is NOT like the others and is getting wound up really type! Learn what that may mean for us. Also, former sunspot region AR4294 and AR4296 will be rotating back unto the Solar limb on the left side looking at the image in the next week and become Earth facing shortly after that. As it does so it will be given a new reference number and learn what it's been doing IF anything while on the backside! 

I'm hoping next week to get some solar viewing and imaging in with my LS35 solar scope and my SeeStar S50 with the solar filter on it.

National Geographic Solar System Stain Glass Kit with my Granddaughter

 This is over at EadsyAstonomy but I am just doing the same post here. My 6 year old granddaugther is out of school and on Tuesday she asked me if I would do something with her since she was out of school. I asked her what she wanted to do? She told me let's go look. So since I was going out to get some items for Christmas breakfast, I took her with me. We stopped at Michael's a craft and hobby store and she took me to the area where there are kits. She todl me "Let's do space, we both like space." She saw a kit by the National Geographic that had the solar system and you created them into stain glass.


We bought that and then another item that her and her younger brother and I could build together. When we got home, we pulled out the kit and we got everything ready, and she painted each planet as we talked about each one. I told her if it clears up soon I can take a telescope out and besides the moon now we can look at Jupiter and Saturn. She got SO excited!

I think she did a really great job on her planets! She picked the colors and wanted Venus to have green on it. It goes to show that some of the greatest outreach we do is with those we love. My granddaughter can take one of my refractors once I set it up now and at 6 1/2 get it on the moon and observe the moon. She asks me each month now to do this even when its cold. I hope that in time, she develops a love and interest in astronomy and the universe we live in! I hope you take the time to reach out as you can to help others to spark their interest, and get them interested!


Observing Report: June 26th - 27th, 2025; Wolf Creek Pass, Duchesne Ridge

News of Interest: Hubble and the Chaotic 'Dracula Chivito; Topsy Turvey Unbalanced Universe; Holiday Dance of Two Dwarf Galaxies by James Webb Telescope

 



  I review 3 recent scientific papers on how Hubble has observed a massive planetary disc and how it is allowing us to extend our knowledge of how planetary systems form. Also, everyone thinks our universe is symetrical, what if it isn't and it's a little topsy turvey? Finally how the James Webb Space Telescope has captured an image of two dwarf galaxies that you too can observe come spring if you have a 8 inch or greter telescope and what we are learning about early galaxy formation from them. 

I also include a study I do not talk about in the video about a planet that the James Webb Space Telescope has studied and found that it is unlike any other planet we have looked at. Even to the point that the chemical structures of the clouds there can condensence and create diamonds! Yep, condensence, rain diamonds!

Cosmic collisions and Type II Supernova and Mass Loss right before blowing up

 


Today I am sharing two summaries from two papers:

The second article is very interesting and I wonder if after going through it if the Great Dimming Betelgeuse experience in late 2019 through April 2020 was a result of a pulsation within the star resulting in the mass loss of dust and particles that blocked the star and IS that a sign that Betelgeuse is closer to its end? Will it experience further pulsations and thus more great dimmings? A few questions I had after going through the article. Head on over and let me know what you think. 

Orthoscopic Eyepieces: Minimalists with Great Benefits

 


A quick review over on EadsyAstronomy of my Orthoscopic Eyepieces, the University HD Orthos and the Baader Classic Orthos, their strengths, weaknesses and why I use them. They are OUTSTANDING for lunar, planet and double star splitting. They bring out contrast in their simple 4 element design and the cost is fantastic (the Baader's are available new, the University HD are not, they are on the used market if you can find them). I also use them on faint deep sky objects though the limited field of view is hard if you are nugging as I do and don't use tracking. And yes, I am a huge fan of these eyepieces and think every visual observer should have at least the 12mm, the 6mm and if they can afford it, the 4mm for those nights of nights!

Sky Safari 7 vs New Release version 8. Should you upgrade? Quick Reivew

 



I've shared my review of Sky Safari 8 with some of its new features and comapred it to Sky Safari 7. You can decide if the new features are worth upgrading for. For me, I pulled the trigger and will be using it to observe in a bout a week when the skies here in Northern Utah finally clear again. Head on over to EadsyAstronomy LINK for a review. Spahgetti Anyone? Observing Semies 147 in Taurus in November . . .

 





Back on January 17th, 2025 I observed Simies 147, a supernova remnant in Taurus. Well, in November I repeated that experience and copied the log from Adventures in Deep Space to repulicate that experience. Over at EadsyAstronomy you can read and watch the video describing about the object, it's history, how I observed it, how to observe and what you need for a successful observation. The Heart of the Matter: Observing December 11th and 12th, 2025, Erickson Pass Rd, Coral Site, Utah West Desert

 I've posted a video and a more traditional post like I did here of my observing and related sketches from December 11th and 12th 2025 at Erickson Pass Rd, Coral Site in Utah's West Desert. 2.8 days until Disaster and a New Theory of how the Moon was created.

 



Only 2.8 days before disaster! Nope, it's not 3iAtlas but over at EadsyAstronomy I have a recap of a wonderful article that discusses how in 2.8 days, we could face a major disaster if a large enough solar flare or CME was released and hit the Earth and the satillites in lower earth orbit. Upfront as the article states, this is not something that is going to happen tomorrow. It is a warning that we need to begin to manage the objects in low earth orbit more effectively. 

Also, a new theory of how the moon was created is offered with perhaps a tinge of evidence. It is one that is worth watching and shows to us that we indeed have a lot to learn about our nearest celestial neighbor, the moon. Here is the LINK to EadsyAstronomy to take a look.

Hello everyone,


My live session from the field failed as I lost video coverage for part of it. I'll be posting that video and audio early next week.


I also received 2 contacts asking what I wear for layering when I obsere in the cold. So I thought I would do a live session at 2:00 pm on Monday over at Eadsy Astronomy to show what I wear when I head off for 5 degrees to 20 degrees tempertures to observe.


I'll share what not to observe and my experiences with those that have come out and not been properly prepared. See you then!

Visible Planets:


Jupiter — Bright All Night


Visible: Evening through morning — Jupiter rises earlier each night and stays in the sky most of the night. 

Best View: After nightfall through sunrise.

How to Spot: Very bright “star-like” object; highest in the southern sky later at night.

Gear: Naked eye great; binoculars or small telescopes show cloud bands and moons. 

 Jupiter is the best planetary target this period. 


Saturn — Early Evening Guest


Visible: After sunset until around midnight. 

Best View: Early evening sky, toward the southern horizon.

Gear: Naked eye is fine; telescope reveals rings and moons (though rings are quite edge-on late December). 


Uranus — Dim but Observable with Optics

Visible: Evening to early morning (sets before dawn). 


Best View: After sunset, in Taurus region, south of the Pleiades.

How to See: Requires binoculars or small telescope; appears as a faint point. 


 Neptune — Faint but Trackable


Visible: Early evening to around midnight. 

Best View: Near Saturn in the sky — use Saturn as a guide star.

How to See: Binoculars or telescope needed (too faint to see with naked eye). 


Mercury — Morning Only (Challenging)

Visible: Before sunrise low in the southeast, but gets lower each day after early December. 

When: Look 30–60 minutes before sunrise if you have a clear eastern horizon.

How to See: Naked eye possible at peak in early December, but by mid-December it gets harder as it descends into twilight. 

Caution: Very close to the sunrise; don’t look at the Sun.


Mars and Venus — Not Visible

Mars: Too close to the Sun in December and not easily seen. 

Venus: In the glare of the Sun this period — not visible before sunrise or after sunset.

No Go for Wednesday, December 10th, 2025 and ALL the Reasons I came to that Conclusion and How I did it

 



Well, the Clouds won tonight as I looked at the following: Astrophereic, GOES Satillete, UDOT Camera and the National Weather Service Local Forecasts. I'm a little disppointed but tomorrow and Friday night will be incredible as High Pressure moves in from off the coast of California and dominates the weather here in  the Great Basin! This post and video over at EadsyAstronomy LINK walks you through how I use all these tools to make my decision on whether I go or not go. I am fortunate as all my sites are between 1 1/2 hours to a maximum of 2 hours away so quite doable.

Someone asked me IF I need to be a weather person to do the hobby. No, you don't but IF you can learn how to forecast your observing sites and predict accurately what is happening, then yes, it saves you time, heartache and frustration. You can ask my friend and observing companion Shane that I am really, really accurate on my weather predicting, about 98% accurate! So yes, in over 25 plus years of doing this, I have learned what tools to use and to become a weatherman so to speak! 

Please realize I am sharing this to try and help you to know how to make accurate predicitons in your are or if you are here in Utah, how I do it and then you can modify or add to it based on what works for you! The hope is to make this all that much more easier so that you can really enjoy this hobby;  thus EadsyAstronomy. 

To Go or Not to Go or When to Go and What I am observing for this next week

 


Over at Eadsy Astronomy LINK you can see how I am deciding whether to go observing tonight or not, or whether Thursday and Friday and then next week is the best. In late fall through winter, one must take what Mother Nature provides in terms of clear skies. I am focusing on Herschel 400, Abell Planetaries and Hickson Galaxy Clusters. I show how I use my spreadsheets and pick them so I can print them off. Next video I'll show the guides I use to get ready to observe these items. 

Using the UDOT camera it is currently not looking promising with the high cirrius out there. I share the forecast from Astropheric forecast National Weather forecast for Vernon Area Thursday Night over on EadsyAstronomy and they are looking FANTASTIC!





Update to AR 4294-4296; AR4298 and CME's Hitting the Earth

 


AR 4294-4296 as you can see in the image from SpaceWeather.com are rotating now to the limb of the Sun as they prepare to move to the back side of the Sun from our viewpoint. No Carrington event as I noted in my posts, but it is still an extremely large Sunspot area and it's been great to observe it when the weather permitted. 

Also, the CME from the class M8.1 from 4299 and the X1.1 from 4298 reached the Earth's astmosphere on 12/9/25 but did not cause the geomagnetic storm some hope for. They were weak by the time they got here after possibly hitting solar wind or other items that weakened them. More over at EadsyAstronomy at this LINK

The Supernova We didn't see: Cassiopeia A, It's history and observing it!

 In observing, many people think looking through a telescope will show this:

I LOVE Supernova and their remnants! I like them so much I did an observing challenge for them and I will keep posting my observations of some of these. Cas A or Cassiopeia A is the remnant of a massive star greater than 8 solar masses that exploded roughly in 1680.  The visual light of the supernova was blocked by instellar gas and dust from earth. What I do on a CloudyNight as an Amateur Astronomer . . .

 


I had a beautiful sunset at home tonight as shown from my back deck looking at the Oquirrh Mountains in the background. However, as beautiful as the clouds were, it meant with the moon rising at 9:30 pm tonight, I wasn't going to head out. My granddaughter has her first piano recital tonight also and her "Papa" had to be there according to her (and yes, I did !). 

So what did I do tonight and last week? Well, I got out my observations and sketchbooks that record them and began entering my observations. Sunspot AR 4298 which is next to AR 4294 -4296 releases a X1.1 flare


At 5:03:06 am UT time (about 11:03 pm  EST and 10:03 pm MST, Solar Region AR 4298 released an X1.1 solar flare. I have covered that and the impact to earth over at Eadsy Astronomy LINK.  

I'll share the Flare Classification Scale here. It is over on EadsyAstronomy with more of an explanation. 

Flare Classification (Weakest to Strongest)

A-Class: Weakest, barely above background.

B-Class: 10x stronger than A.

C-Class: 10x stronger than B; minor effects.

M-Class: 10x stronger than C; can cause polar radio blackouts, minor radiation storms.

X-Class: 10x stronger than M; the strongest class, potentially causing long-lasting radiation storms, satellite disruption, and grid issues.

I did some solar observing and sketching today and it's a great time IF you have a solar telescope to be observing the Sun! AR 4294-4296, 4298 and 4299 were easily observed. Also since AR 4299 released a M8.1 flare on Saturday, December 6th that should reach earth midday on December 9th. It could mean good Aurura hunting on Tuesday night.

Sunspot AR4294-4296: 90% the Size of the Sunspot that caused the 1859 Carrington Event!

 


This shows a sketch made of the Sunspot by The English astronomer Richard Carrington. He sketched the massive sunspot complex on September 1, 1859 that produced the Carrington Event in 1859. That sketch is imposed on today's Sun and is placed right above AR 4294-4296 so you can see the size comparison.

An extremely large patch of dark spots, called sunspots or a sunspot complex, showed up on our nearest star, our Sun and they are about 90% the size of the sunspots that cause the 1859 Carrington Event. The Carrington Event is the biggest solar storm on record.

When sunspots get this big and are magnetically tangled, they can launch outward super powerful solar flares called X-class flares and also shoot out massive clouds of solar material known as a conronal mass ejection or CME. It's not usually a good thing if a massive CME is released and it is release and heads directly face on towards the Earth.

IF, and that is the critical thing, IF a large CME hits the Earth's magnetic field, it can cause geomagnetic storms. These storms can disrupt our satilletes, GPS, radio communication, Internet and even mess with power grids that haven't been reinforced.

AR 4294-4296 are capable of producing strong CME's. Scientists currently are saying that there is no strong evidence yet that this sunspot will trigger a Carrington Level event causing castophere. So beware of the doom and gloomers that are going to pop up and say this is the end of the world.

The best case scenerio is we just might get some very very nice auroras out of this ie Northern Lights IF any storms are produced from AR 4294-4296 and that CME hits Earth at the right angle.

Scientists and astronomers are watching and monitoring AR 4294-4296's magnetic structure, flare activity and any CEM's that might be Earth-directed. Size along isn't enough. Richard Wolf-Jacobson, the creator of PiFinder,  was so gracious that he took an hour of his day and sat down with me and we discussed on the most amazing tools that I feel has come out to help promote visual observing, the PiFinder. What is 3I/Atlas?

 




After seeing fake images like this come up and then fake AI of world reknown physists Michio Kaku and Brian Cox declaring that 3I/Atlas sent out a signal saying that for our specieis "Our time is done." That we have been evaluated and found lacking . . . 

Enough. I made a video with a post with links that shows that 3I/Atlas is just another interstellar comet that is making it's way through our solar system. Yes, it has some strange things but they are explainable and they enhance our scientific curiousity about 3I/Atlas but they are NOT aliens.
