We’ve known about "superluminous" supernovae—cosmic explosions 10 times brighter than normal—for a couple of decades. But what actually gives them that terrifyingly awesome extra punch? For the first time, NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has caught the "engine" under the hood in the act.
