Great news for the Moon! NASA has officially ruled LINK out any chance of the asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting the lunar surface during its close approach on December 22, 2032.

EadsyAstronomy Weekly Newsletter for March 8th to the 14th, 2026

 Here is this week's Newsletter! 

This week we see a transition period for the night sky.  The “Blockbuster” lunar eclipse is now passed, we still have some excellent planetary pairings and the arrival of “Galaxy Season” as the Moon begins to wane! We also introduce Daylight Savings Time back into the mix in the early morning of Sunday, March 8th. That means the Sun will set later in the evening now as daylight continues to increase.

DoubleTrouble: Deep Sky Wonders in the Twins

 



This is coming out later than I would want. It would probably be better for me to hold on to this until next October/November and publish it. However, Gemini is still positioned well in the early evening and into the late evening and the objects here are fun to go after during the wanning crescent and new moon period. So I decided to go ahead and share it.


Please realize these observing programs are a starting guide. There are a LOT more objects that can be both fun and challlenging within them. So whether you are a visual observer like me, or you are looking for targets to image with your setup or to go after with a SeeStar or simmilar electronic scope, please feel free to use this as a guide.

I will state upfront. Eventually I will be combing these programs into a seasonal catalog by season. There will be a fall, winter, spring and summer guide. I also offer a full guide that has my observations so you can see what I saw when I observed these items. In addition I use LiveSky and do a live recording/video to show where they are and to go through my observations. Those are only for all members currently and willl be only for contirbuting member beginning come June 1st, 2026. So if you enjoy these and are not a member, I invite you to join.

Observing Report for October 28th, 2025 Butterfield Canyon, Utah

 


On the evening of October 28th, 2025, the First Quarter moon was up and the sky was clear. I had a lot of open clusters to observe so I decided to head out to a local canyon. I loaded up the 100mm Skywatcher Evostar, my mount for it and my eyepieces. I also took my Orion XT10 with the Zambuto mirror and protstar secondary to compare the views.

The Anatomy of a Supernova

 

 

So this article/video will focus on two papers. The First is "Critical Metallicity of Cool Supergiant Formation. II. Physical Origin" LINK. The second is "Multiwavelength Signatures of Supernova Shock Breakout from Red Supergiants in Two Dimensions" LINK.

Every once in a while astronomers run into a stellar explosion that refuses to follow the rules.

Most supernovae follow a fairly predictable script: a star reaches the end of its life, collapses or detonates, brightens rapidly, and then fades away as radioactive elements decay. But modern sky surveys are discovering more and more events that simply don’t behave the way textbooks say they should.

Two recent research papers published in The Astrophysical Journal explore this strange territory. They investigate unusual stellar explosions that change type, brighten again after fading, or interact with their surroundings in unexpected ways.

For amateur astronomers who follow supernova discoveries—or who spend time hunting faint remnants in large telescopes—these papers reveal something important:

The death of a star is often far messier than we once believed.
